TSM Performance Rating System

TSM Performance Rating System

The TSM Performance Rating System presupposes that implementing mines are compliant with the law; the System is beyond compliance.

Mining facilities self-assess annually their performance against each indicator under the TSM Protocols. For each indicator, they assign either a letter grade ranging from “C” to “AAA” or, in the case of two Protocols, “Pass” or “Fail”, that reflects their performance. Facilities must have their self-ratings externally verified every three years.

One of the key strengths of TSM is that mining companies are measured where the mining activity takes place — at the mine site. The results provide local communities with a meaningful view of how a nearby mine is faring.

COMP has established the goal of having all of its member facilities achieve a Level A or better — or Pass in the case of two Protocols — in all Indicators under all 8 Protocols COMP has adopted.

In two Protocols — Prevention of Child & Forced Labor, as well as Crisis Management & Communications — a mine can only Pass or Fail.

Level A is broadly defined as good practice and Level AAA is defined as excellence and leadership.

Meanwhile, a “C” or a “Fail” rating means the mine did not meet an Indicator requirement under a particular Protocol; all requirements are evidence-based. It does not mean the mine is in violation of a national or local law, rule or regulation.
